SOLDIER STORIES: Non-Combative Units?
“I remember one time this POG that ended up at our FOB said the chopper pilots who flew him in on the blackhawk were non combat units, this was right after they got off the bird. They had to lay down a blanket of fire with their .50s because the chopper was getting shot at from across the valley.
So naturally, we called up the crew chief on the radio and told him that the accountant they dropped off called them POGs. I have never seen a Blackhawk break formation while it was flying with two other slicks and four guns but sure enough that chopper came right back to the LZ, heavy fire and all.
The crew chief bolted out the open door of that helicopter, com wires in tow, and ran up to us on the edge of the landing pad. He grabbed that fucking guy and threw him face down into the dirt, kicked him in the ass four or five times and started screaming “NON COMBATIVE UNITS EH?!?! YOU STUPID COCKSUCKER I TAKE SHITS WITH MORE COMBAT EXPERIENCE THAN YOU”
Then he ran back to his bird, jumped in, plugged in his coms, racked his .50 for the flight out, and they took off. It was easily one of the best moments I’ve ever had in the Army. To this day I’ve never been able to figure out which crew chief it was, because he had his mask on and no name tapes. But holy shit, that was fucking funny.”

Five months after being deployed to Iraq, Lima Company’s 1st Platoon found itself in Fallujah, embroiled in some of the most intense house-to-house, hand-to-hand combat since World War II. Civilians were used as human shields or as bait to lure soldiers into buildings rigged with explosives; suicide bombers approached from every corner hoping to die and take Americans with them; radical insurgents, high on adrenaline, fought to the death.
The Marines of the 1st Platoon (part of 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment) were among the first to fight in Fallujah, and they bore the brunt of this epic battle. When it was over, the platoon had suffered thirty-five casualties.
Patrick O’Donnell’s We Were One chronicles the 1st Platoon’s story, from its formation at Camp Pendleton in California to its near destruction in the smoldering ruins of Fallujah.

Keep on truckin’.
Maj. Kent Solheim, Charlie Company, 4th Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group Company commander, defends his position from insurgent small arms fire during a fire fight in Kunar province, Afghanistan. Solheim was injured July 27, 2007 in Karbala, Iraq, while conducting a raid to capture an insurgent commander. During the firefight that ensued, Solheim was shot four times. Solheim did not initially lose his leg. It was only after he lost function of his lower left leg that doctor’s felt there was a slim chance of making a full recovery. Solheim eventually elected to amputate his leg below the knee. Solheim was motivated by others he knew who continued to serve on active duty with a prosthetic.

Just another day at the office.
[Top] Coalition special operations forces Pararescue Jumpers lower a stretcher during a medical evacuation in Nuristan province, Afghanistan.
[Bottom] Coalition special operations forces Pararescue Jumpers medically evacuate an injured Afghan National Army commando during a mission in Nuristan province, Afghanistan. Commandos and coalition special operations forces, the first to visit that area in more than two years, defeated insurgent forces overrunning a village. Commando-led missions provide national security by encouraging local villagers to look to government forces for support rather than insurgents.
